Highest turnout in Punjab since 1967 in Lok Sabha Polls
Punjab (April 30, 2014): A record breaking 73% of the total registered vote of 19.5 million today voted their respected candidates for election. As 13 Lok Sabha MP’s seats from Punjab where at stake, the polling remained in large peaceful, except a few minor incidents of violence where rival parties clashed.
One of the sought after seats is the one from Amritsar where the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate Arun Jaitley takes on former Punjab Chief Minister from Congress, Captain Amarinder Singh.
High voting figures are also being credited to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wave which has swept various areas of Punjab, in particular Sangrur where Bhagwant Mann stands a strong chance of winning. The previous record was set in the 1967 General Polls, where Punjab had registered 71.13% polling.
